Code 93

Code 93 is an alphanumeric, variable length symbology developed and maintained by Intermec Corporation. It combines some of the characteristics of Code 39 and GS1-128 (UCC/EAN-128) into a single barcode language.

The Character Set

Code 93 contains the following 43 usable characters

  • Numeric digits 0 - 9
  • Uppercase letters A-Z
  • Symbols % + $ / . -
  • The space character

Additionally, it supports the encoding of the entire 128 ASCII character set with the use of shift characters.

The Symbology Structure

Each character in a Code 93 symbol is made up of three bars and three spaces, each of which can be single, double, triple, or quadruple thickness. These six elements are spread out over a space of nine modules.

Code 93 contains the following symbology structure:

  • Leading quiet zone
  • Start character
  • Input characters representing data
  • Two check digits
  • Stop character
  • Trailing quiet zone
