Tips On Downloading and Installing Software
All of the downloadable software stored on Seagull's Web page is stored in compressed form, so that the files can be transmitted by modem in
the shortest possible time. However, that means that, once you have downloaded a file, it still has to be uncompressed before you can do anything with it. Then, once it has been uncompressed, it still needs to be installed.
Below, you will find some tips on downloading, uncompressing, and installing Seagull software.
Preparing a Temporary Directory to Download To
In preparation for downloading a file, create a temporary directory on your hard drive, unless you already have an empty directory suitable
for temporary use. (You will usually not require the files left in the temporary directory once you have finished uncompressing and installing the downloaded software and can therefore then delete them at your
option.)
Downloading Your File(s)
To download a given file, simply click on the text reference to it (usually in a different color, such as blue).
A window will now pop up, whose contents will vary depending on which Internet browser you are using. (Don't worry if your browser complains
about not finding a properly configured "viewer." You want to download the file, not view it.)
Choose the option that is closest to "Save" or "Save to Disk" or just "Download."
Specify the above-mentioned empty directory as your location to download to.
Uncompressing Your Downloaded File
The software downloaded from Seagull's web page will have been stored in one of two formats. For more information on uncompressing the type
you downloaded or need to download, click on the appropriate one of the two listed here:
- Self-Extracting EXEcutable format. (These files end in "EXE".)
- Or, ZIPped format. (These files end in "ZIP".)
Making an Optional Demo Diskette
Once you have uncompressed your downloaded file, our older DOS products and most of our Windows drivers can be copied over to a single
diskette if you so desired.
However, the Bar Tender for Windows and a few of our drivers are too large to fit on a single diskette. (These are available from Seagull on diskette, but you cannot convert the downloaded version yourself.)
Once you have uncompressed those downloaded products that are capable of fitting on a single diskette, the contents of the temporary
directory that you downloaded it to will be identical to the contents of the real demonstration diskette (if it had been mailed to you by Seagull) except for the original zip or self-extracting EXE file that you
downloaded (which you can retain or delete at your preference). In fact, if you delete this one file (or move it to another directory), the remaining contents of the directory can be copied to a diskette and
you will have an exact copy of what you would have received in the mail if we had sent you an actual demonstration diskette. However, there is no reason why you can't simply leave these components in
your temporary directory -- just donīt copy it along with the uncompressed files to diskette because they probably wonīt all fit.
Installing From Your Uncompressed Files
As described above, you now have a directory that contains all of the files that you will need to install the demonstration version of your
software. Depending on whether you downloaded one of our software programs, or a Windows printer driver, click on the appropriate item below for more information on how to proceed.
To Install A Program
For instructions on installing drivers, see Windows Printer Drivers page.
