BarTender v9.0 Service Releases

Overview

The free Service Release at the bottom of this page can only be used to update existing copies of BarTender where the version number begins with 9.0.

If your BarTender software is older than version 9.0:

BarTender 9.01 (Service Release 2)

BarTender 9.0 (build 2476) was first released on September 9th, 2008. This was our largest release in more than 10 years, including the introduction of three brand new applications. Although it was also our most heavily-tested release ever, a few problems did get reported from the field. The first issue described here was significant enough that we increased the version number from 9.0 to 9.01 when publishing Service Release 2 (SR2) on September 30th, 2008.

  1. Improper Reading of Blank Database Fields: When reading database records using an OLE DB database connection, BarTender was not properly reading blank database fields. Instead of correctly filling the associated object on the label with the blank data, the most-recently read non-blank value for the field was improperly reused. This could result in incorrect data being printed on a label. This problem does not extend to the reading of label data using ODBC and from text files.
  2. ".Net" Exception Error: This issue is mostly cosmetic and does not occur on Windows installations that are running English as the default language. On non-English Windows installations, if the Tools, General Options dialog was opened in the History Explorer or Reprint Console applications, the "Language" option would initially start out blank. Unless this option was then manually set to "English," pressing the Ok button would cause a non-fatal .Net exception error. Pressing "Continue" allowed the application to continue without trouble. Pressing "Abort" caused the application to exit (without data loss). (The international translations for History Explorer, Reprint Console and Printer Maestro will become available and be downloadable for free as part of a Service Release scheduled for November 2008.)

Issues #3 and #4 below were first resolved with the publication of an unannounced service release (build 2486) on September 18, 2008.  This was our first service release for BarTender version 9.0x and was therefore designated SR1..

  1. XML Script: If Commander received a "BarTender XML Script" trigger event, Commander would display an error message that begins: "Error 0 - The BarTender XML Script Command cannot execute..." and ends with "...registered BarTender version is 900." Because Commander was reading BarTender's version number incorrectly, it would not forward the XML Script to BarTender. (BarTender would have read the script just fine.)
  2. Removal of "Formats" Folder: Execution of an in-place upgrade of BarTender would remove and recreate the "BarTender" folder within the Windows "My Documents" folder. This would therefore also remove the "Formats" sub-folder and any label formats located inside of it. The BarTender installation program was corrected so that the "Formats" sub-folder is no longer removed during an in-place upgrade.

BarTender 9.01 (SR3) includes SDKs and Updated Translations

Build 2524 of BarTender 9.01 was first released on November 13th, 2008 and was designated Service Release 3 (SR3).  Changes include:

Updated Language Translation:  Versoin 9.0 of the Bartender Label Management Suite was released with English-only display of the user-interface for all newly-added features and applications.  Now, with the release of SR3, these new features can display in any of the 23 languages supported by BarTender.

.NET SDKs for BarTender: SR3 includes the new ".NET Print" and ".NET Print Server" software development kits.  Now, C# and VB.NET developers can programmatically control BarTender from within other applications more easily than ever before.  For more information, please see the BarTender .NET SDK white paper.  (To install now, download a "Full BarTender Suite" and select the "Custom" install option.)

Minor Bugs: A number of very minor bugs were fixed with SR3 and are not described on this web site.

Installation Instructions

Starting with BarTender 9.0, the update instructions became simpler than they were for older versions of BarTender.  After downloading the latest BarTender 9.0x service release:

  • If you Already Installed a Version of BarTender 9.0x: Do not bother to remove your old software. Simply, install the BarTender 9.01 Service Release over your existing installation of BarTender 9.0. You will not be prompted to re-enter your original Product Key Code (PKC).
  • If you Never Installed BarTender 9.0: Simply perform a new install of your downloaded BarTender 9.01. When prompted for a Product Key Code (PKC), provide the one that came with your original copy of BarTender 9.0.

Download

All download options listed below have everything you need to start designing labels right away. The "BarTender only" option is the smallest file and will therefore download the fastest. The larger "Full BarTender Suite" downloads include Commander, Printer Maestro, History Explorer, the Reprint Console, and support for detailed Print Job Logging to a SQL database. They also include the BarTender .NET SDKs.

The multilingual downloads support instant switching of the user-interface between more than 20 languages, but they take somewhat longer to download than English only. (The supported languages can be seen in the list of BarTender "Getting Started" Manuals.)
